To tell you about the content of this book in a few sentences is hopeless. The blurb says enough. You should just dive into this book without knowing much about it. Like I did.If you like creepy and twisted thrillers, you will love "Jar Of Hearts". We meet Georgina when she is being tried for murder. She has to go to jail for 5 years. At first I thought I found myself in an episode of “Orange Is The New Black†and wondered if I was reading the right book. But this is so much more than the blurb promises. The story is full of twists and surprises. Layer by layer is exposed by the tragic story that happened at that time between Geo, Angela and Calvin. The true trick in this book for me is above all the figure of Georgina (Geo). You are always close to her, she is the main character. She is in court, has to go to jail. You know she's complicit. But you feel for her. But gradually the full story unfolds and I have to say that in the end I was really shocked. The book contains some dramatic scenes. But I was more impressed by how light-footed the moral integrity of the characters is dismantled. Even more than the physical abuse, the human chasms of the characters shocked me.If you like well-written, gripping, complex and fathomless stories, you should definitely put "Jar Of Hearts" on your wish list. You will find hardly a better one.
I am a bit late to the party on this one but I am very glad I eventually got around to it. Jar of Hearts turns out to be an excellent thriller, well written, gripping and frequently quite gruesome.One thing I really liked was the way the author dealt out information only when needed in the form of Geo's recollections of past events. One vital piece was withheld right until the end which made the final scene a really shocking event. Another interesting thing to me was that the author made me want Geo to win in the end, and even live happily ever after, despite the fact that I did not like her one bit as a person. She made some woeful choices!Altogether a very enjoyable and engrossing book and I look forward to whatever Jennifer Hillier comes up with next.
Wow. Jennifer Hillier seems to top herself with each new book she writes. This was a page turner for sure, as all her books are for me, but there aren't enough words to describe the feelings I have right now. What seemed like a great thriller turned into so much more. Even if I had any guesses as to how it would all end, I never would had expected it to be the way it was. Full of suspense, mystery and full on intensity, Jar Of Hearts is by far my favorite book of 2018.
Jar of Hearts was a fabulously addictive page-turner of a read.A psychological crime thriller that I was glued to from start to finish.Starting almost backwards we begin far along in the timeline when Angela Wongs mutilated remains are finally discovered in the woods by Geo's childhood home.An axe that Geo has been waiting to fall on her head for the past fourteen years.With her high powered career destroyed and her CEO Fiancee abandoning her to face her fate, Geo prepares for a lengthy stay incarcerated behind bars.This is a tale told in flashbacks and we get to hear first from Geo herself then later from her and Angela's other BFF Kaiser who is now a detective in the Seattle PD: during there school years he had strong feelings for Geo: more than just friendship but she never reciprocated his affections instead obsessing in a toxic relationship with the much older and dangerous Calvin James.The same Calvin who later went on to murder three other women and earned himself the moniker The Sweetbay Strangler.Now Geo has paid her dues and is trying to forgive herself and put her awful past behind her.But there are now victims who bear a striking resemblance to Georgina being killed and disposed of in exactly the same way as Angela Wong was and Geo finds herself right at the centre of this new mystery.So, This was a definite read in one sitting story and though I did kind of see the twist coming a mile off It didn't really take away from my overall enjoyment of this.This is a book I highly recommend and it really was such a heart-pounding, satisfying read.Full of twists and turn throughout this has so much going for it.A massive thumbs up from my camp.I voluntary reviewed an Arc of Jar Of Hearts.All opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
I’m so happy other readers put this book on my radar and told me it would be a read for me. I was a bit surprised too that it was an ’emotionally chilling’ psychological thriller and that it turned out to be such a page-turner that I read it in two days.We meet Geo – short for Georgina – in the present, while she’s standing trial, testifying against Angela’s murderer. The harsh truth is that Geo kept her mouth shut for fourteen years about what she knew had happened to her friend. Of course I felt like she got everything she deserves, the crime is obvious, she lied to her friend’s parents, she let them hope for news about their daughter, and let everyone search for Angela for fourteen long years and yet… it’s not that simple. Through snippets in the present and the past I really got to know Geo and both in present and past she seems like a good person. Her friendship with her best friend Angela was sincere and in the present she honestly cares for her friend Cat, so where did this go wrong, how could she do this?The story and Geo’s character really grabbed me from the get go. The revelations and events leading up to her murder were dark and gritty and it also calls for trigger warnings. That sense of foreboding keeps growing stronger and while you know Angela’s body was found, I simply couldn’t imagine it would actually be happening or why as Angela was such a bubbly person.Calvin James is bad news, that’s pretty obvious, he’s someone that I would take a big detour for so why is she still protecting him now by not telling the police he’s been trying to contact her? Dead bodies are piling up again and still she doesn’t say anything. I couldn’t fathom a logical explanation for this at all. No matter how hard I sympathised with her, I felt she was so wrong here and couldn’t redeem her choice.Hillier made Geo a very likeable character with quite a tragic backstory, one that forgives her for some stupid choices she made, but is it enough to keep forgiving her for what she’s doing in the present? I was wondering how far she was going to push it.I really liked the entire novel but my favorite part was close to the end where there was a fantastic twist and even when I figured it out right the moment before the lid was blown off, Jennifer Hillier kept the twists coming and wrong-footed me completely with how this would end. It became even more thought-provoking when looking at the choices she made and deciding for myself if Geo’s a good or a bad person. Obviously she’s a bit of both but maybe everybody will lean more toward one side or another.
